Biography

Mary serves as Chair of the firm’s School and Higher Education Team and is a member of the Labor & Employment Team.

Mary serves as counsel to public and private sector employers on a wide array of human resource issues. With over 20 years of experience working in education law, she serves as counsel to numerous school districts throughout Wisconsin on general school law issues and matters involving both students and employees. She has extensive experience with regular and special education issues, as well as labor and employment matters. She represents private and public sector employers on labor and employment matters such as contract negotiations, grievance procedures, hiring/terminating employees, family and medical leave laws, Americans with Disabilities Act, harassment and employment discrimination. She has extensive experience with Wisconsin school districts and the correlating regulatory agencies.

Specifically, Mary serves as counsel in the following capacities to:

Represent school district boards of education and administration in teacher dismissal matters, discipline and classroom performance issues.

Investigate and advise school districts in student and teacher discrimination and harassment complaints.

Negotiate and mediate successful administrator contracts, employee collective bargaining agreements and non-certified staff contracts.

Represent school districts in numerous student special education and discrimination hearings and mediations under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Office for Civil Rights (OCR).

Represent private employers in all aspects of the employment relationship to include hiring, employment resolution, state and federal discrimination claims, record retention, discipline matters and employee disability issues.
